We’ve all heard of drinking milk for strong bones, but is that really all it takes to keep our inner framework healthy? What if you’re lactose intolerant or want less dairy in your diet? We’ve got good news – there are lots of easy, natural ways to support good bone health, and if you’re eating with Fitfood, you’re probably already doing several of them!
Eat your veggies
Calcium is key for building good bone strength, and so is vitamin C – two things you can get plenty of by eating your greens. Vitamin C stimulates the production of the cells that make up our bones, and calcium works alongside collagen to increase bone density and keep them strong and flexible. Some great veggie sources of calcium include almonds, broccoli, kale, chickpeas and most beans. For vitamin C, capsicums, broccoli, kale, tomatoes and lots of fruit are your friends.
Our Corned Silverside with Broccoli Mash, Wilted Greens & Mustard Cream is a nostalgic and satisfying hit of all these essential nutrients.
People who are less active have been shown to have a higher risk of diseases like osteoporosis, whereas weight-bearing exercise helps promote new bone growth. Add a bit of strength training, jogging, or even climbing a few stairs into your routine to help keep your bones strong.
Get enough protein
We know protein is a key component of a healthy, nutritious diet, but did you know that it makes up about 50% of our bone density? Getting plenty of protein promotes calcium absorption.
Check the nutritional details on any Fitfood meal to see how much protein it contains. Or, top up your meal with an additional protein pack if your lifestyle has high energy and protein needs.
Soak up the sun for a dose of vitamin D
It’s good for you in so many ways, including mental health and immune system support. One of the main benefits of vitamin D is calcium and phosphate regulation, which is essential for keeping bones, teeth and muscles strong and healthy. As well as getting out in the natural light, you can also boost your vitamin D intake with foods like salmon, sardines, egg yolks and mushrooms.
Treat yourself to this zingy Sambal Glass Noodle Stir Fry with mushrooms and enjoy it out in the sun for a vitamin D-boosting lunch.
