Although a sugar kick can give you a quick energy burst, its counterproductive and not sustainable in the long run. You get that initial high but then eventually get that sugar crash we all know too well. What you end up with is a roller coaster of energy levels that effect your mood throughout the day and can in fact disrupt your sleep. 

Eating well and prioritising sleep will improve energy levels throughout the day and will reduce the likelihood of reaching for sugary snacks in the afternoon. 

While glucose serves as the primary energy source for our brain, consuming excessive amounts of sugar that lead to fluctuations in blood glucose levels can result in diminished cognitive performance. This is often why people can struggle with memory and those familiar feelings of mental fogginess.

So how can you beat those sugar cravings? There are plenty of small things you can do that can help keep those sweet cravings in check such as choosing grain based breads, using cinnamon to satisfy a sweet tooth, and keeping fresh fruit on hand at work. One of the more sustainable things you can do that will have a positive effect on your overall health is to eat more protein and good fats. Protein will keep you fuller for longer which means you're less likely to reach for a sugary treat in the afternoon.
